Is Berlin Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Berlin is generally safe for solo female travelers. Violent crime is rare, locals are usually welcoming, and physical harassment is low. Regardless, it's important to remain vigilant, especially after dark. There is a good police presence and public transportation is usually safe at all times. However, some neighborhoods are considered less safe than others. Like in any other city, use common sense and take standard precautions like staying in well-lit areas, not disclosing you're traveling alone to strangers, and being wary if you consume alcohol.

How safe is Berlin?

Safety at night:

Safety at night:Safe

Berlin generally has a high safety level. However, like in any major city, certain precautions should be taken, especially at night. Central areas and neighborhoods are typically well policed and lit. Public transportation runs around the clock and taxis are readily available. Nevertheless, sticking to well-traveled areas is advisable. Some areas might be less frequented late at night and it's always important to stay aware of the surroundings. Walking alone is generally safe but caution should always be exercised.
Public transportation:

Public transportation:Safe

Public transportation in Berlin is widely used by locals and tourists due to its efficiency and comprehensive network. You can conveniently travel all across the city without feeling unsafe, even into the early hours of the morning. However, like any other large city, pickpocketing can be an issue so stay vigilant about your belongings and be cautious of your surroundings. Overall, Berlin's public transport can be considered safe for solo female travelers.
Street harassment:

Street harassment:Low

Berlin, being a modern and liberal city, has relatively few issues of street harassment. Although incidences can occur, as they can anywhere, most of the areas that tourists frequent are safe and well patrolled. You may occasionally encounter some rude comments or unsolicited attention especially during the night. Still, residents are generally welcoming and respectful towards women. You can feel confident about navigating the city independently. Nonetheless, we advise using common sense and being aware of your surroundings in less crowded areas or later at night.
Petty crimes:

Petty crimes:Low

Berlin, as a global city, generally maintains a low rate of petty crimes. Although instances of theft and pickpocketing can occur, particularly in crowded areas and public transportation, they are not rampant. The locals are typically respectful and helpful to tourists. However, staying alert and aware of your surroundings is always recommended for any traveler.
Tap water:

Tap water:Very safe

Berlin's tap water undergoes rigorous quality checks and is perfectly fine to drink. It is sourced from multiple deep wells and is some of the most regulated in the world. You can confidently refill your bottle from any tap, save money and help to reduce plastic waste.

Berlin is a beautiful city offering lots of art and culture. Historical centre is amazing, as well as all of the museums. I especially recommend visiting the Museum Island. If you travel to Berlin, try the famous Berlin doner. One time trying is enough)) As a solo female traveler I felt safe, however I was not out till late.

Solo travel experience

I did not feel safe in Berlin, travelled by train from Hamburg where I have a student pass, I didn’t know they were not valid for train ride in Berlin. The security fined me 60 euros, and was very aggressive regarding taking me out of the train and not wanting to look at my pass. Really ruined my day.

I felt incredibly safe in the city. I enjoyed food from different cultures. Transportation was easy to use, and people were significantly friendlier than I expected. It was also very safe at night, which was my priority.

I enjoyed being in Berlin; I went for work, and honestly, I could enjoy its streets. However, in the hotel I stayed at, there was a spa, and I only used it once because apparently, it is normal in Germany for people to be naked in spas. Moreover, in my hotel's spa, clothing was prohibited, and you could only use the robe they provided. The food was normal; I am a vegetarian, so something that surprised me is that in ALL places, there was a vegetarian/vegan option. I felt safe at all times and went to explore the monuments.

I would definitely recommend Berlin. The a and o hostel at Berlin Mitte is good located, cheap and offers just woman rooms. I felt really safe there and had a lot of fun. Great bars, clubs and food sport around.

Solo travel experience

So, I just spent 3 nights in Berlin and out of a few of my solo trips to European cities (Dublin, Barcelona, Porto, Lisbon), I felt absolutely safest there. I loved how the city is connected through public transportation, I felt safe returning to the hostel after a night out, etc. I walked around the city, both during the day and at night, and I was never harassed. I even went out at night for the first time - scary, but so funny. I stayed at St Christopher's Inn hostel - personally, I found it quite basic for the price I paid (compared to other hostels where I stayed in other cities), but the location was ideal, and overall it wasn't bad.

Berlin is quite safe, but it’s still a city so don’t leave your things unattended at bars, etc! Petty theft or pickpocketing can still happen. Use common sense as in any major city. However, I feel generally safe here.

The safety depends on the different areas and the time. Of course at night it becomes more "dangerous" especially for women. Personally I don't go alone on public transport after 1 am, especially in the city where you will see a lot of homeless and drunk people (mostly men). Outside of the city center it is pretty safe in my opinion, I can go out whenever I want to and I have rarely been worried

I had a solo traveler experience in Berlín, I only stayed 2 days but it was great. I stayed at Christopher's inn Hostel near Alexander platz. People at the Hostel were friendly. They have a tour for the guests and beer was 2x1 for the guests. I had fun and met great girls.

My first solo travel! Was amazing, way better than I expected - and I expected a lot. I stay I'm Mitre and it is worth it so you don't need to spend a lot of money on transportation. My travel was focused on museums and art and my tips are: buy the 3 day tickets if you are a museum holic like. Also, I had the chance of going to some gallery's fee free because I arrived very "late" so they dont charge in the last hour.

About Me

Hi everyone! :) It's Dominika here Current travel: I'm really thrilled to finally hit the road traveling with my furry baby Almond as the warmer season finally arrives in Europe and hopefully make some lovely connections with sisters like you along the way. About me: I'm a calm and romantic soul who's into meditation, yoga, self-development, and simple joys. The ocean and sunset are my elements. Currently, I'm pouring my heart into writing a poetry photography book. I really love cooking and I'm a bigtime foodie, always happy to share a meal or two with you. I'm a professional photographer, and I have been working in marketing for the last 6 years, experienced in production, creative direction, social media, growth marketing, fashion/advertising agency. Recently, I jumped into the fintech industry. I've been living in Berlin for almost 10 years, but I'm originally from Indonesia (I can also host you in Bali later this year as I’m moving back!!🥰) About my dog Almond: He is my ultimate travel buddy—a friendly, energetic 6yo bigboi I adopted from North Macedonia. Food is his kryptonite, and he's always up for playtime with other dogs, although he's a bit scared around uncastrated male dogs. Additional travel project: I would really love to support some sisters with local businesses/entrepreneurial spirits whether you need some images for your business, content creation, or even just for some fun portraits in exchange for accommodation. I believe in empowering women through visual storytelling and would be honored to capture your essence through my lens. We can chat more about it and I'm open to any ideas. We can also connect via Instagram @dominikadian Hoping to connect with like-minded sisters and looking forward to sharing some memories with you! Cheers and lots of love🌷xx
